Play on Tipu by Rangayana director to be staged shortly
Mysuru: Months after he invited trouble for criticising Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan, Rangayana director Addanda Cariappa has produced a play on the ruler, which will be staged shortly.
Speaking to reporters at Rangayana, Cariappa said he wrote a book - ‘Tipu Nija Kanasugalu’ - which will be released on November 13. His work has been adapted to theatre and it will be staged from November 20 at Vanaranga in Rangayana.
He said the book is published by Ayodhya publications of Bengaluru. Kannada novelist SL Bhyrappa will release this book at 4pm at Vanaranga at Rangayana premises on November 13. Writer Rohith Chakrathirtha will speak about the book in the presence of MP Pratap Simha, social activist Vadiraj and others.
His book aims at exposing the atrocities against locals and misrule of the 17th century ruler of Srirangapatna Tipu Sultan, who was the son of Persian-based ruler Hyder Ali, who also attacked the Kingdom of Mysore, he said.
“Many historians have glorified him as a patriot for attacking the British by covering up his misdeeds in Indian textbooks. I have thrown light on the other side of Tipu Sultan's administration in his book. Like several Muslim rulers who attacked Indian culture, customs and tradition, Tipu was also one among them,” he alleged
“Several writers and pseudo-secularists described Tipu as a great patriot, protector of Hindu religion due to his gifts to a few temples to cover the atrocities he committed in the past. He also took an anti-Kannada decision as he made Persian as his official language,” he added.
‘Tippu Nijakanasagalu’ has been adapted to the theatre with 15 episodes to educate the masses and to build patriotic spirit among people. Well-known stage designer Shashidhar Adapa, and Pramod Shiggav have helped him in the stage play. Subramanya and Dhananjaya have recorded music, Mahesh Kallatti has worked on sound and light and S Ramnath on songs. The stage play will be about 3 hours 10 minutes.
As many as 30 Rangayana Mysore repertory artistes, guest artistes are involved in the play.
The first show of this stage play will be held on November 20 at 6pm at Vanaranga in Rangayana premises. It will be held on November 21, 24, 26, 27, 30 and on December 4. His repertory has decided to stage 100 shows across the state, he said.
