Thane: Tanker driver held for releasing toxic chemicals into Waldhuni river in Kalyan
KALYAN: The Mahatma Phule police arrested a tanker driver who was releasing untreated hazardous chemicals into Waldhuni river in Kalyan early on Saturday morning.
The police have registered an offence against the driver and the owner of a chemical company named as Dodhia Chem Tech.
The arrested driver has been identified as Nazar Ansari and search is on for the chemial firm owner.
The incident came to light when some locals noticed the tanker releasing chemicals into the river. Following which, they informed the social activists from Ulhasnagar, fighting against Waldhuni river pollution, about the same. The activists later informed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) as well as local Mahatma Phule police who finally registered an offence against the duo.
Satyajeet Burman, an activist from Ulhasnagar Citizen Forum, said, "The pollution case related to Waldhuni river is in Supreme Court (SC) in which court had slammed the state government for allowing the Ulhas and Waldhuni rivers to degrade gradually because of pollution, saying that there was 'absolutely no coordination between authorities to protect the rivers".
Burman further said, "Despite SC order, agencies like MPCB are not doing continuous patrolling on riverside and such incidents of releasing untreated hazardous chemicals into n Waldhuni river continuously happens".
