CHENNAI: The Madras high court on Friday permitted the RSS to conduct rallies and public meetings in 44 places across the state despite opposition from the Tamil Nadu police.
"This court could not find any material in the intelligence report filed by the police to deny permission for the rallies," Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan said.
However, the court refused permission for the rallies and meetings in Coimbatore, Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Palladam, Nagarkovil and Arumanai (Kanyakumari district).
The court passed the order on a batch of contempt petition moved by RSS members against the Tamil Nadu home secretary and DGP for refusing permission to the rallies and public meetings in 50 locations in the state despite a court order.
"You (the state police) have cited FIRs pertaining to 2008 to 2011 in the intelligence report. What is this? I found in the report that only in a few places some incidents have taken place. You have filed reports of weekly and monthly magazines of some organisations," the court said.
The state had cited change in law and order situation after October 23 Coimbatore car blast for denying permission for the rallies.
The issue pertains to a batch of pleas moved by RSS cadres challenging denial of permission to conduct rallies and meetings on October 2. On September 30, while disposing of the plea, the court directed the state police to grant permission for the rally and meeting on November 6.
Since the police failed to grant permission despite the court order, the organisation moved the present contempt pleas.
