THANE: A 76-year-old woman ended up losing Rs 1.3 lakh after an unidentified man exchanged her ATM card at a kiosk and withdrew the money.
The police said that the woman is a resident of Diva and lives alone. A couple of weeks ago, when she visited an ATM of a private bank, she requested the accused to help her withdraw Rs 5,000. He did the same, and told the woman to enter her pincode.
However, the accused while returning her card exchanged it with another card, which she didn't realise then.
It was after she went back to the ATM to withdraw more money, she realised that the card she is using doesn't belong to her. Later when she visited her bank to check her balance, she found out that all her money has been wiped out, the police said.
That's when she realised that her ATM card has been exchanged by the accused who saw her putting the pincode to withdraw the money, and duped her.
She later lodged a complaint with the Mumbra police station who registered a case of cheating under relevent sections of the Indian Penal Code, and also under sections of the Information and Technology Act.
The police further informed that they are investigating the case, and also urged the citizens to not take help from any stranger at the ATM centre.
