Kerala: IMD issues very heavy rainfall alert for next few days

KOCHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the heavy rainfall spell due to the northeast monsoon is likely to continue over Kerala for the next few days. An orange alert for very heavy rainfall has been sounded for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki on Friday, while other districts except Kannur and Kasaragod are on yellow alert.
The heavy rainfall in the state is influenced by two systems, including a cyclonic circulation lying over south Tamil Nadu and another that lies over southwest Bay of Bengal.
Also, heavy rainfall of 7-11cm is very likely to occur at isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad on Friday. Yellow alerts have been sounded for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon has been active over Kerala. According to the 24-hour rainfall recorded on Thursday morning, Neriamangalam received the highest rainfall (10cm), followed by Aluva (8cm) and Peruvannamuzhi (7cm). North Paravur received 6cm, while Thalassery, Muvattupuzha and Mattannur received 5cm each.
IMD said in the extended weather forecast for the next two weeks, from November 3 to 16, that a low-pressure area is likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lanka coast towards the end of the first week around November 9-10. Skymet weather said the northeast monsoon has become active in the south peninsular region. Intense weather activity is expected to impact TN and Kerala. Isolated places are likely to have heavy rainfall in TN and Kerala.
Munnar, Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala also stand a chance of intense rainfall over the next two days. Thereafter, moderate rains are likely to continue till the weekend.
