Port Huron Northern's Tyler Jamison drives to the basket during a game last season. The senior verbally committed to play basketball at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday.

Fans in the Blue Water Area don't have to travel far to see one of Michigan's top high school boys basketball players.

But a year from now, they'll have to leave the state to watch this one continue his career.

Port Huron Northern's Tyler Jamison verbally committed to Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday. The senior made the announcement on Twitter.

"It checks all the boxes, especially for basketball," Jamison said. "On my visit, I got to know some of the players and I really liked them. The coaches are great. I like the campus. Academically, I'm going into finance and they have a good business program ... I believe I can be successful there and that we can win some games. That's something that's important to me."

Fairleigh Dickinson is a Division I program located in Hackensack, New Jersey. It was the fifth school to offer Jamison a scholarship since July 2021. The four others were all Division II programs in Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, Wayne State and Lake Superior State.

Port Huron Northern's Tyler Jamison rises a jump shot during a game last season. He was named the MAC Blue MVP and led the Huskies to a MAC Blue championship in 2022.

He was first notified of Fairleigh Dickinson's interest by its coach, Tobin Anderson, in late September. A Division II coach from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference had reached out to Anderson on Jamison's behalf.

"They had one scholarship spot available," Jamison said. "So (Anderson) came out and watched an open gym. He liked what he saw and then offered me a scholarship. I went to campus not long after ... I think what Coach Anderson is doing out there is something that can be very successful."

Added Jamison: "They believe in me and they really like my game. So I'm excited to go out there and play my game. I'm prepared to put the work in and do what I have to do."

The 6-foot-5 swingman is coming off a sensational junior year at Northern. Jamison averaged 29.0 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game. He led the Huskies to a 15-6 record and a MAC Blue championship.

But the accolades didn't end there. Jamison was named the MAC Blue MVP and was selected to the Associated Press 2021-22 All-State boys basketball team for Division 1. He set Northern's single-game scoring record with 59 points in a 75-62 win over Warren Cousino on Jan. 18. Then on March 3, Jamison became the program's all-time leading scorer.

Weeks after the season concluded, however, he broke his foot in early April. Jamison missed out on four of the NCAA evaluation periods for high school players. The injury erased precious floor time in front of college scouts. But he made a full recovery and returned to the court in July.

Now with all of that behind him and a scholarship in hand, Jamison is eager to begin his senior season at Northern.

"It's just nice that I know where I'm going no matter what happens," Jamison said. "It's comforting and I can focus on playing basketball, which is what I want to focus on."
