Teacher held for ‘rape & murder’ of minor maid

Guwahati: A schoolteacher was on Thursday arrested on charges of sexually assaulting and killing a 17-year-old girl, who used to work as a maid in his house in Dibrugarh district.
The girl was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the accused’s house on October 31. Police said she had been working for him for the last 10 years.
“The accused is in our custody and interrogation is on. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem. Since the girl was a minor, so a case of child labour will also be registered against him,” said the investigating officer.
A source said the girl had run away from the teacher’s house about a couple of weeks ago. The teacher had then allegedly threatened her family with dire consequences if she did not return. Fearing harm to her family, she finally returned to Dibrugarh only to be found hanging a few days later.
The girl’s family have lodged a case alleging that the teacher killed her and made it appear like a suicide.
Local students’ unions and other organisations have demanded strict punishment for the culprit.
