GURUGRAM: A woman who had allegedly come to Farrukhnagar to steal utensils all the way from Delhi was thrashed by locals on Tuesday after they thought the child with her was abducted by her.
Two other women who had come with her fled the spot. Police said that the child was the woman’s and she was released on bail after she joined the investigation.
A shopkeeper, Balram, said he runs a utensil shop in Farrukhnagar. A group of women came to his shop on Tuesday evening to buy utensils. He spotted a woman acting suspiciously and accosted her, he told cops.
“I raised the alarm after the woman, who was carrying a bag and had a child with her, started running away. Passersby caught her. On checking her bag, some stolen utensils were found,” he told cops.
There was a ruckus and locals, suspecting her of child-lifting, thrashed her. A video of the incident was circulated widely on social media, in which some are seen grabbing her and slapping her.
A police team soon reached the spot and found that the woman had come to steal utensils. She also brought her two-and-a-half-year-old child along.
Following the complaint by the shopkeeper, an FIR was registered against the woman under Section 379 (theft) of IPC at Farrukhnagar police station and she was arrested.
“The woman has been identified as Sunita, a resident of Sultanpuri, Delhi. She was released on bail after she joined the investigation. But we are also trying to identify the women who caught her and slapped her over child-lifting charges. There is no complaint against any of the women who slapped the accused, but we will identify them and make them understand that no one has the right to hit anyone,” inspector Jitender Singh said.
