Work to relay 125 roads expedited
Coimbatore: Work to relay roads at a cost of 26 crore under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Fund (TURIF) will gain steam in a week, said city corporation officials. While electricity minister V Senthil Balaji inaugurated the work for laying roads on Saturday, only preliminary work is being carried out as of now.
An official said a total of 125 roads, both arterial and minor, in the city will be relaid. Thanneerpandal Road and a stretch from S-Bend to Codissia Road are included in the project, keeping in the mind the long-pending demand of residents to repair the roads, the official said.
“Of the 125 roads, 37 roads are in the north zone, followed by 33 roads in the central zone. A total of 27 roads and 22 roads are in the west zone and the south zone respectively. The remaining six roads are selected from the east zone,” the official said.
Deputy commissioner of corporation M Sharmila said road work will commence in a full-fledged manner within a week as preparatory works for relaying roads are already underway. “Work will be carried out continuously and will be completed within two months.”
Another official said 26 crore is the first installment of 200 crore promised by the chief minister to carry out road work in the city.
“Once full funds are allotted, the money would be used within three months. Commuters would be able to discern the improved quality of roads once the work is completed,” the official said.
