
Mumbai Highlights, November 04, 2022: A 130-year-old tunnel was discovered underneath the nursing complex at Mumbai’s government-run J J Hospital Friday. The tunnel is believed to be 200 m long. Dr Pallavi Saple, the dean of the hospital, said the building under which the tunnel has been discovered was once used as a medical ward to treat women and children. Now, it is being converted into a nursing college which is located in the premises of the J J hospital and Grant Medical College, Mumbai.
In other news, Darius Pandole, who survived the car accident in which industrialist Cyrus Mistry died, has told the police that his wife Dr Anahita was driving the Mercedes-Benz car in the third lane and could not merge into the second lane that turned narrow near the Surya river bridge in Maharashtra’s Palghar, an official said. The statement of Darius Pandole (60) was recorded on Tuesday by the officials of the Kasa police station in Palghar, under whose jurisdiction the accident took place on September 4.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday announced that vehicular movement on Gokhale Bridge was likely to be shut from Monday for at least two years to carry out reconstruction work of the east-west corridor of the bridge. The BMC has already written to the traffic police and requested closure of the bridge.
Within the next three to four years, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will have a total of 14 Metro lines spread across 300-kilometres.
Of these, two elevated Metro lines – 7 [Andheri (E)-Dahisar (E)] & 2A ( Dahisar-D N Nagar) – are in the final stage of completion and expected to be fully open to the public by December 2022 or by early next year, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Earlier, in April this year on Gudi Padwa, 20-km stretch of Metro Line 7 and 2A was opened to public use between Aarey and Dhanukarwadi and is currently drawing a daily ridership of over 25,000 on an average, as per the MMRDA. Point failure was reported in Down slow line in Mumbai central, due to which trains are running late by over half an hour in the Western Railway Line.
Central Railway trains are also running late because of a unit defect at Diva down slow line from 7.15 pm to 7.29pm.

A 31-year-old woman died by suicide in Andheri (east) Wednesday allegedly because her husband was having an extra-marital affair with another woman. According to her mother, her husband and mother-in-law both physically and mentally tortured the woman, leading her to die by suicide. The woman’s husband has been arrested.
The police said the woman, Kankukumari Parmar, died by suicide around 4 pm and Thursday, her husband Prashant Parmar and mother-in-law Urmila were booked for domestic violence and abetment to suicide under Sections 306, 498A and 34 of the IPC on a complaint from woman’s mother Pawnidevi Suthar, a resident of Pali in Rajasthan. The police also picked up Prashant.
The couple got married in February 2020. The police said the Parmar family had borne all the expenses made during the 13-day wedding celebration on the promise that Kankukumari’s family would later pay back 50 per cent of the total expense. Read more

Technical bids for Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR) Package Civil-1 (Design and Construction of BKC Station of Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor) were opened today.
Following four bidders have submitted their bids

Financial bids will be opened for technically qualified bidders, once the technical evaluation is completed.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) clarified on Friday evening, that right-wing leader Sudhir Suri, who was shot dead in Amritsar earlier in the day, was not a part of Shiv Sena, and has no relation with Shiv Sena. A Shiv Sena leader said, "This is not related to us."

In response to closure of Mumbai's Gokhale Bridge, Mumbai Metro One issued a statement on Friday saying that it was prepared to accommodate additional commuters.
"We anticipate the ridership to increase by around 20,000 per day. We also keep a train on standby and will introduce services, if come across any increase in footfalls at the stations. We had successfully accommodated additional commuters when the bridge was closed in July 2018," a spokesperson for MMOPL said.

Ahead of the arrival of Congress's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' in Maharashtra, several senior party leaders in the state have been practising brisk walking and doing exercises to keep pace with Rahul Gandhi during the public outreach programme.
The Bharat Jodo Yatra is scheduled to arrive at Deglur in Nanded district of Maharashtra from neighbouring Telangana around 7 pm on November 7.
Former state chief minister Ashok Chavan said he and other leaders have been practising brisk walk and exercising to match Gandhi's steps, while state Congress president Nana Patole said he has been doing warm up exercises and push-ups to keep himself fit for the yatra. (PTI)

A Maharashtra-based forensic medicine professor who has been fighting for a ban on 'two-finger'/virginity test for 12 years has hailed the Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the practice in sexual assault cases and said it should be extended to matters of marital dispute too.
Dr Indrajit Khandekar, working at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) in Sevagram near here, had been fighting since 2010 for a ban on "virginity test" claiming it had no scientific basis.
In 2018, he had submitted a report to the Medical Council of India (MCI) seeking removal of "virginity test" from the medical curriculum. Dr Khandekar, in his report, had highlighted the unscientific basis of the practice, reasons for seeking its removal from the syllabus and how it violates human rights and leads to gender discrimination.
