Municipality must help improve Curchorem’s cleanliness rating: Nilesh Cabral

MARGAO: PWD minister Nilesh Cabral has expressed his disapproval over his home constituency, Curchorem, failing to make it to the ratings at the national level in terms of the cleanliness parameters.
Cabral made his displeasure known to the elected representatives of Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) and its chief officer at the meeting of the council held recently.
“Curchorem is so clean, but even then it didn’t obtain the required score to get the rating at the all-India level. So I told the chief officer to let the councillors get involved (in keeping the town clean). The chief officer gave a presentation on our failings on the various parameters of a clean city,” the PWD minister said.
In the report of the Swachh Survekshan 2022 released earlier this month, Goa failed to find a place in the top 100 rankings of urban local bodies (ULB) on cleanliness parameters.
Indore had emerged as the cleanest city of India for the sixth time in a row, while Surat scored a hat-trick as the second cleanest city since 2020. Navi Mumbai was ranked as the third cleanest city in the survey.
The minister said that with the contract for door-to-door collection of garbage to end soon, the question of whether to extend the contract or call for fresh tenders was put before the council—the issue however remained unresolved and will be decided at a later date.
Chairperson of CCMC Jasmine Braganza said that two places, Pongirwal and Ghotmorod, have been identified by the council for setting up urban health and wellness centres under the XV finance commission grants.
The meeting also discussed the proposal for setting up a butterfly park and a herbal garden in the town with the assistance of the Goa State Biodiversity Board.
PWD minister Nilesh Cabral said what’s disappointing is that despite Curchorem being “much cleaner than other places,” it missed the rankings
