KOLHAPUR: A total of 38 cases of dengue and six chikungunya cases were reported in the last two weeks in Kolhapur city.
A person is suspected to have died due to dengue, however, the lab test reports are awaited. The rain during the two weeks of October has led to the creation of many mosquito breeding grounds.
Ramesh Jadhav, the chief health officer of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC), said, "We have deployed a team of doctors, paramedical staff and sanitation workers. They visit the localities where the patients suffering from infection are reported. As per the state government's recent guidelines, we are concentrating on such localities only. The teams inspect the breeding sites, utensils stored with water, overhead tanks, tyres, water collector of the refrigerators, ponds and planters. We are destroying such breeding spots and sometimes applying chemicals to kill the mosquito larvae. We are also carrying out fogging across the city's narrow lanes."
Jadhav said the cases usually increase after the rain stops. During the last two years, the cases were much higher with less mortality. This time, the cases are under control. Daily over 300 active breeding sites are being reported in the city.
