In order to improve its tourism industry, the Goa tourism department has declared to crack down on diverse illegal activities, including cooking and drinking in the open, begging and unlawful selling, and peddling in tourist places, driving vehicles on the beach among others as “nuisance,”, bringing in a fine of up to Rs. 50,000 for those violating the rules.

Goa tourism director Nikhil Desai also prohibited illegal selling of tickets for water sports taking place outside the state, like Malvan (south Maharashtra) and Karwar (Karnataka). Desai said that the ban has been issued since these activities have spoiled and worsened or are expected to damage or weaken the tourism prospective of these places.

Among the prohibited activities are cooking food in open spaces and throwing garbage, consumption of liquor in public spaces and breaking of glass bottles, among others.

In addition to cooking, eating and drinking, the order also prohibits a wide range of unlawful activities like hawking and touting that could obstruct the free movement of tourists and create barriers or force tourists to buy items, goods and services.
