The FIR against the trio has been registered under sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 473 (Making or possessing counterfeit seal etc with intent to commit forgery punishable otherwise) of IPC and section 66 of Punjab Police Act after a long investigation, at Mullanpur Dakha police station.

Dakha DSP Jasbinder Singh said that the snatched car was recovered by the police. However the accused cops changed its number plate and inspector Prem Singh kept it for his personal use. When the matter came to the light, Inspector Prem Singh and Inspector Chamkaur Singh (who was then ASI and the investigating officer of the case) came up with a concocted story and brought in a man Jagseer Singh, who in his statements claimed that he purchased the SUV from a car dealer and gave it to Inspector Prem Singh. However, during the investigation Jagseer failed to provide details of the car dealer from whom he claimed to have purchased the SUV.
