ROURKELA: A man was arrested by Bonai police in Sundargarh district on Monday night for allegedly duping more than 10,000 people in eight panchayats of Rs 3 lakh on the pretext of giving them health cards.
Two more accused in the case are on the run. "We will arrest them soon," said S Debta, SDPO (Bonai).
A man from Rourkela and his associates had come to Bonai in May with the proposal to provide health cards in Lahunipada, Tikayatpalli and Bonai areas. They collected Rs 50 per health card and assured the people that every three months a free health check-up camp will be organised for them. When after three months, the card holders called them for the camp, the fraudsters started avoiding them. Suspecting their activities were fraudulent, villagers of Gobindpur lodged a complaint with the Bonai police station four days ago.
