Vasco: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has initiated a drive to verify trade licences of shopkeepers and other business establishments in Vasco on Wednesday.
MMC chairperson Leo Rodrigues, chief officer Jayant Tari, besides other officials of the MMC, visited the shops as there were complaints of sub-leasing, resulting in loss of revenue to the council.
Rodrigues told TOI, “During the course of verification, it was found that the person in whose name the trade licence has been issued is not present in the shops, or has died. In such cases, the MMC has decided to initiate strict action for not complying with municipal laws.”
“The MMC has appealed the kin of deceased persons who run the shops to transfer the trade licences to their name to avoid penalties,” said Rodrigues.
As chief minister Pramod Sawant and transport minister Mauvin Godinho have told municipal authorities to focus on revenue generation by collecting long-pending dues, the MMC has decided to initiate a drive against the defaulters which will help in overcoming financial difficulties.
