Normal to above-normal minimum temperatures were likely over most parts of the country, except some parts of Northwest India and some areas of foothills of the Himalayas, where below-normal minimum temperatures were likely, it said.
IMD said monthly rainfall in India as a whole in November 2022 was most likely to be above normal (>123 % of long period average). The long period average of rain over the country as a whole during November, based on the data from 1971 to 2020, is about 29.7mm.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed the occurrence of La Nina phenomenon for the third consecutive year in the Pacific Ocean. As per experts, the occurrence of La Nina is usually associated with cooler-than-normal winter temperatures in India.
DS Pai, director of Institute of Climate Change Studies, government of Kerala, told TOI, "Season to season, there could be changes in how cold it may get during the upcoming months, especially with a La Nina prevailing. The recent SASCOF Report had also shown that night temperatures could be higher than normal in several parts of India till December this year. Though it is too early to predict, a La Nina event could make January and February next year cooler than usual, especially in northwest India."
