Thiruvananthapuram: The Adani Group's Vizhinjam international seaport project, caught in an agitation by fisherfolk alleging threat to their lives and livelihood, has brought archrivals CPM and
BJP together in the district.
The district leaders of both parties took part in a ‘long march’ taken out by the Save Vizhinjam Port action council to the government secretariat on Tuesday. Even the local leaders of Congress were part of the event though its district leadership kept off.
CPM district secretary Anavoor Nagappan and BJP district president V V Rajesh addressed the march in front of the secretariat while thousands took part in it. The action council is a collective of residents of Vizhinjam and its adjoining areas. It is for the first time that the leaders of the CPM and BJP came together on a public platform against the ongoing agitation by fisherfolk though they have separately denounced it.
“The protesters in Vizhinjam are being controlled by a group which has ulterior motives. They have vested interests and that is why they are continuing with the agitation even after the government has agreed to their demands. Violence is spreading in the region in the name of the agitation,” Nagappan told the gathering. "Their intentions are suspicious, and the CPM will provide all support to the people's collective opposing the anti-port agitation," he said.
