"I said at the toss that we didn't think too much about the past poor performance, we have great players in the playing XI and in the squad, we had the confidence that showed up today. It's a ruthless tournament, last year South Africa went out despite having 4 wins out of 5 games. This is a World Cup, there will be pressure and the best teams do thrive under it. We bat deep, I thought the wicket was a little bit tricky, especially against spin and I thought Alex Hales played a fine hand, it's all about partnerships, one day he gets going, some other day it'll be my turn. It's nice at the end of a career when you look back at things on an individual level (on going past Eoin Morgan as the highest scorer for England in T20Is). The game was shaped in different ways, facing spin was tough, we wanted to be flexible with both bat and ball - the way Moeen bowled that fantastic first over, he put New Zealand under a lot of pressure. Hales played brilliantly, we know what he is capable. You need to be patient in T20 cricket, you need to keep backing guys. It's important to keep pushing them and keep encouraging them. We were aiming for 160-165, but we managed to push beyond that. We have had success batting first. The games against Australia, we won batting first. You always need to take wickets in the second half. Batting first was the right option for us today. The pitch was a bit damp. He (Curran) has been bowling well, hitting the wickets hard. First and foremost we need to win against Sri Lanka."
With 26 needed from the last, it was only a miracle that could help the Kiwis. An excellent last over from Sam Curran does the job for the Three Lions. England win the game by beating New Zealand by 20 runs and stay alive in the T20 World Cup 2022.
The well set Glenn Phillips is out caught at long on and Sam Curran is delighted. A brilliant knock from Glenn Phillips comes to an end. NZ need 40 from 12 balls.
Mitchell is out caught by Jordan!! New Zealand are losing it here as wickets continue to tumble. New Zealand need less than 50 now, but they have only three overs to do it! Score after 17 overs, NZ: 131/5
Kane Williamson is gone for a run-a-ball 40 and then Mark Wood gets Neesham for 6 and things have slowed for NZ. Wood's high pace rushes Neesham and he cant control the shot. New Zealand need 54 runs from 26 balls. They have six wickets remaining.
Glenn Phillips is making England pay. Quickfire fifty by Glenn Phillips - yet another incredible innings! New Zealand need 57 runs in 30 balls
The tournament has seen some blinders on the field; it has also beheld some inexcusable spills. Like the catch Moeen Ali grassed off Glenn Phillips. The latter’s wild hack off Adil Rashid trembled out of the inside half of his bat and ballooned in the air. Ali had to move just a couple of feet to his left to get underneath the ball. He did settle right under it. But the ball, somehow, contrived to elude his cupped palms and struck his chest. Everyone was lost for words and emotions. A moment’s silence splashed across the ground. Maybe, it was the low ring of lights at the Gabba, down under the roof level and could be on an angle to get in players’ eyes. Earlier, Daryll Mitchell, an agile fielder, had dropped a sitter off Jos Buttler. But for all the technical hurdles, this was as straightforward a catch Ali could have ever wished for.
Moeen Ali possibly lost the ball under lights

Moeen Ali has put one down. Oh, dear! Michael Atherton on commentary says- "That's an unbelievable dropped catch". Time for the drinks break! NZ need 114 from 60 balls.
On to the 9th over after a couple of uneventful ones in the middle. Livingstone to bowl this one and that's a boundary to end the 9th over. NZ 62/2 after 9 overs
Mark Wood in to bowl the last over of the powerplay. 2 runs off the first ball and follows it up with a wide. The 3rd ball is straight at Williamson's pads and he flicks it for a boundary. The last ball gets an inside edge and passes past the leg stump for four more. Unlucky for the bowler. NZ 40/2 after 6 overs
Curran in to bowl the penultimate over inside powerplay. 1 run off the first 3 balls. Cracking yorker as the batters struggle to hit the ball. And gone!!!! Allen pulls and that's straight into the hands of Stokes. NZ 28/2 after 5 overs
After losing Conway cheaply, Finn Allen has taken 12 runs from the 4th over by Woakes. It included a six and a four. NZ 26/1 after 4 overs
New Zealand have pulled this back as Lockie Ferguson bowls the last over. 3 runs off the first 2 balls and then a SIX! Sam Curran smashes it over the mid-wicket. But the fast bowler comes back strongly to snare Ben Stokes. Lbw!! Last ball and England steal three. Good running. They reach 179
Brilliant work by Southee to dismiss dangerous Buttler! Score after 19 overs, ENG: 163/5
The tennis forehand is fast becoming a productive shot for batsman against short and short-of-length bowling in the World Cup. After Suryakumar Yadav employed the shot, down the line variant, against Anrich Nortje in Perth, it was Jos Buttler’s turn to reproduce it. Two balls after he was dropped trying to hook Lockie Ferguson, he unleashed the forehand smack against the slow bouncer. Only that he had enough time to flip the ball over mid-on, unlike Surya who flayed it past mid-off. You can call it a cross-court forehand. Little wonder that he was once upon a time the U-13 tennis champion of Somerset. But the forehand slaps are becoming an effective counterattacking ploy against the short-pitch barrage. Could this be the antidote? - Sandip G
Jos Buttler has now gone past Eoin Morgan as England's all-time leading run-getter in men's T20Is.
Livingstone gets the measure of Southee and smashes a monster SIX ! 98m hit. WOW | Score after 16 overs, ENG: 137/2
As early as the fourth over, Mitchell Santner ambled into bowl, surprising the commentators. But this was not a leap of faith bowling change. This was specifically designed at shackling Alex Hales, who tends to struggle against left-arm spinners, especially Santner, who has gotten him out twice in 24 balls, conceding just 27 runs. It was yet another instance of the game’s fixation with micro-matchups. It turned out to be a successful move. The first three were dots, the fourth a leg-bye. Hales shuffled across, he moved away, he would step down, but Santner always second-guessed him. The fifth was an abominable short ball that Hales brutalised through midwicket. That was a rare blemish. But whenever he bowled full, Hales, crease-tied, would struggle to time the ball. After a sequence of 2, 0, 0, 1, 2, Hales decided to counterattack. He slashed at a semi-short ball, but could only manage an edge past the keeper for a four. Santner shook his head in dismay, but he was soon to be rewarded. Seeing him charge down the track, Santner darted one fast and wide, so wide that it was actually called a wide.. Hales stretched his bat, but could manage nothing and the keeper Devon Conway whipped the bails off. - by Sandip G
OUT! Moeen Ali doesn't quite get onto this one and Trent Boult takes the catch in the deep! Ish Sodhi is delighted. Ali is gone for 5. New Zealand bowling keeping it tight, England need to motor now to put pressure on the NZ batters. Score after 14 overs, ENG: 110/2
