Ludhiana: Two cousins from Ashok Nagar of Salem Tabri area, who were allegedly attacked by their neighbours more than 20 days back, have been struggling to get an FIR lodged against their attackers despite providing a CCTV footage of the incident.
Rakesh Sharma, a 37-year-old businessman from Ashok Nagar, and his cousin Varun Sharma were injured in the October 10 attack. After seeing no progress following their meetings with senior police officials, the duo have written to the director general of police and Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann against the police inaction. Rakesh has also posted the matter on Twitter, tagging the CM and DGP.
Rakesh said and his neighbours had nurtured a rivalry against him for the past three years, since the time he started living in the locality. He said the neighbour used to indulge in spats with him often and hurl abuses in a drunken state.
“On October 10, the accused was creating nuisance. When I tried to stop him, the accused attacked me along with their accomplice. I rushed to my cousin’s place in another lane of the locality to save myself. The accused followed me and attacked me again. My cousin Varun Sharma, who came to my rescue, was attacked with some blunt weapon,” he said.
Rakesh stated, “We have got the medico legal report and the CCTV footage of the incident in which the accused were captured attacking us. We tried to defend ourselves, but there were about 10 people who overpowered us completely. I suffered minor injuries while my brother Varun suffered severe injuries. Despite the MLR and CCTV footage, the Salem Tabri police did not lodge an FIR.”
“I have been visiting the police station, however nobody has listened to us. Now I have written to the DGP Punjab and CM Bhagwant Mann to get justice. I have also made a tweet tagging both the DGP and CM. Though I have got a reply on Twitter, I am still waiting for a phone call from the police.”
Assistant commissioner of police (North) Maninder Bedi said Sharma brothers and their neighbours had indulged in a scuffle and suffered injuries. “We are verifying the case by scanning the CCTV footage.”
