The Sanilac County Sheriff Department responded to a report of a fatal traffic crash Monday night.

A 10-year-old boy died Monday as a result of a traffic crash involving an Amish horse and buggy.

Rescue crews responded to Cass City Road east of North Van Dyke Road in Greenleaf Township shortly before 8 p.m. for a report of a vehicle rear ending the horse-drawn trailer, according to the Sanilac County Sheriff Department.

A 32-year-old Snover man was westbound on Cass City Road in a 2012 GMC Terrain when he struck the cart and trailer, which had pulled onto the road from a driveway, the sheriff department said.

The 35-year-old driver of the cart was transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. His 12-year-old son was transported to Hills and Dales Hospital before being transferred to Flint Hurley Hospital, the sheriff department said.

The man's 10-year-old son was pronounced dead on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The Cass City Fire Department, Cass City MMR, Sanilac EMS and Marlette EMS also responded to the scene.
