Rain throws normal life out of gear in Chennai and suburbs
The first-day firstshow of this year’s monsoon was intense as expected, but the city’s newly built stormwater drains and other infrastructure stood up to the nearly 24-hour intermittent spells. By Tuesday, the city and its suburbs received 10-13cm rainfall, bringing at least 50 locations under water, inundating two underpasses and causing treefalls at 35 locations. Last year, however, 167 locations were waterlogged at the end of the first-day spells, prompting the Greater Chennai Corporation to deploy about 1,200 motor pumps. On Tuesday, the civic body had to press only 156 pumps into service.
