GURUGRAM: A 24-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly beaten to death by her parents-in-law over dowry in Sarhaul.
In his police complaint, the deceased woman's father Vinod, a tailor by profession, claimed that his daughter Sapna's husband Rahul and her parents-in-law would often harass her over dowry.
"Her parents-in-law used to mentally harass her for dowry. They would not allow us to meet her or talk to her over the phone. Rahul would hit her after getting drunk. And once she was also thrown from the stairs," Vinod, a Faridabad resident, told the cops.
"They didn't allow us to talk to our daughter even on Diwali and didn't let her meet her brother on Bhai dooj. They asked us to arrange Rs 5 lakh and then meet our daughter," he alleged in his complaint.
However, according to the family, on October 26, Sapna messaged her brother, Neeraj, at 3.45pm, saying that she was being tortured by her husband.
"She asked her brother to not reply because if her husband would read the messages, he would beat her up. The same day, my son Neeraj transferred Rs 3 lakh to Rahul's bank account," Vinod told the cops.
Later, the family came to know that Sapna had been hospitalised. By the time they reached the hospital, she was dead. The doctors said that she died during the treatment. Sapna was six months pregnant.
An FIR was registered against Sapna's husband and parents-in-law at Sector 17/18 police station under sections 304B (dowry death) and 498A (husband of woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC on Sunday.
"As per our investigation, Sapna died during the treatment. We will soon make arrests in the case," said a senior police officer.
