Silchar: Eight Bangladesh nationals, including seven men and one woman, who were in the past arrested for illegally entering Assam, were deported to their country through the Sutarkandi checkpoint near the India-Bangladesh international border in Karimganj district on Saturday.
They were identified as Mohammed Lal Mia Kazi of Rajshahi district, Lalon Mia of Moulvibazar district, Mohib Uddin of Kumarshail in Baralekha area, Atabur Rahman of Bubartal, Abdul Matin of Sylhet district, Farid Alam of Cox’s Bazar district, Faima Begum and Rahim Mia of Sylhet.
While Abdul Matin was arrested in Karimganj for smuggling drugs, the rest entered India in search of jobs but without valid documents. Faima Begum and Rahim Mia, who are mentally unstable, were arrested in Guwahati in 2019 and kept in a shelter home.
The rest were lodged in a detention centre inside the Silchar Central Jail after they had served the prison terms awarded by the respective courts. On Saturday, BSF personnel and the Assam Police handed the eight persons (after their medical check-up) to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) jawans and the immigration police of Bangladesh at the Sutarkandi checkpoint.
At least 137 Bangladesh nationals, who had illegally entered Assam and were subsequently arrested, have been repatriated to their country via Sutarkandi since 2016.
