PUNE: Asking for help to withdraw cash from an ATM kiosk proved costly to a Shaniwar Peth resident (64) on October 11 this year as a trickster in his bid to assist the senior citizen swapped his ATM card and withdrew Rs5.79 lakh from his bank account.
The victim, a retired person, lodged a complaint with the Vishrambaug police on Friday.
Senior inspector Sunil Mane of the Vishrambaug police said, "The senior citizen had gone to an ATM kiosk to withdraw cash on the morning of October 11. A young man, standing at the entrance of the kiosk, offered help to the elderly man after the machine made some noise. The elderly man shared his PIN with the suspect as the trickster helped him withdraw the cash. After withdrawing the cash, the suspect swapped the ATM card of the senior citizen with a similar-looking card while handing over the cash."
"Over the next six days, the man managed to withdraw Rs5.79 lakh at different ATM kiosks," he said.
