Ludhiana: A couple posing as customers stole a gold chain weighing around 24gm from the showroom of Kalyan jewellers at Rani Jhansi road in Ghumar Mandi. The accused replaced the gold chain with another chain of lesser value before escaping. The theft was discovered during an audit of the jewellery store.
Division number 8 police lodged an FIR against the unidentified accused on the statement of showroom manager Balaji. He told the police that on September 29, a couple posing as customers came and said that they wanted to buy a gold chain. As the salesperson started showing him the chains, the accused stole a 24gm gold chain from the box and replaced it with a 6gm chain. The salesperson did not notice the switch and the couple left without buying anything. Days later, when the stock was checked during an audit, one of the gold chains was found to be missing while another was found to be of another brand. Shop officials scanned CCTV cameras and found the couple stealing the gold chain and replacing it with another one. Sub-inspector Bhajan Singh said that as the couple were wearing masks, their faces were not captured in the cameras. Police are scanning CCTV cameras outside the showroom to trace the accused. A case has been registered under Section 380 (Theft) of the IPC.
