Berhampur: Ten suspected cases of lumpy skin disease (LSD) have been detected in five villages of Khallikote block in Ganjam district.
While three cases were detected in Bakuta gaon, two each were found in Phasipada, Panka Sahi and Sri Krushna Saranpur and one in Keshapur, sources said. All the animals had high fever, swollen lymph glands and nodules on their skin.
“We collected the samples of the infected cattle on Saturday and they will be sent to the Animal Disease Research Institute in Phulnakhara ,” chief district veterinary officer Debaraj Behera said.
He added that the veterinary doctors are keeping a close watch on the situation As a preventive measure, the infected animals have been isolated.
The contagious disease mostly infects cattle and causes fever, nodules on the skin and can even result in death. “Besides contaminated food and water, the disease spreads through direct contact with mosquitoes, flies, lice and wasps,” Behera said. “Last month we had vaccinated the cattle in Chikiti and Patrapur blocks,” Patra said.
In Gajapati district, around 10,000 cattle had been vaccinated following sporadic cases being reported in
Andhra Pradesh last month.
Prior to the vaccination drive, the Gajapati administration shut the cattle market in Paralakhemundi and restricted movement of livestock from Andhra Pradesh to Odisha.
