Jaipur: The Mewat region of Bharatpur district, especially places such as Pahari, Deeg and Kaman, has lately become a hub for manufacturing of illegal firearms. Bharatpur police had conducted a crackdown on these ‘factories’ in 2019, but they are once again flourishing in the area, making police plan a fresh strategy to contain the menace.
Two such factories were busted in the area recently, and seven country-made pistols, raw materials and equipment used to manufacture firearms were seized, said officials.
“Some of these areas are close to the
Haryana border. Some people take places near the hilly area on rent to ensure they can flee easily during police raids. We have conducted several raids this year, and five of them have fetched good results,” said Bharatpur SP Shyam Singh, to TOI.
A probe has found that some people involved in illegal manufacturing of firearms also supply them to neighbouring states such as Haryana and
Uttar Pradesh. “They sell them at throwaway prices varying from Rs 2,500 to Rs 4,000. It actually creates further law and order problem for us,” said a senior police officer of Kaman police station.
During Sunday’s raids at Moongraka village and Dholawas in Pahari and Deeg police station areas respectively, seven people engaged in the illegal work managed to flee. This was the third such raid on these factories this year.
“We have got some crucial inputs on such factories, and we will continue our crackdown. Similar raids would be conducted in the coming days,” said a senior police officer.
While Bharatpur police had raided five such factories in 2019, there was little attention from police on this menace in the past two years.
