Have sought 2nd opinion on Hemant Soren case, says Jharkhand governor Ramesh Bais
RANCHI: Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais has sought a “second opinion” on the office-of-profit case related to Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, triggering unrest in Ranchi, with the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) threatening to move the Supreme court.
“No one should point a finger at me. So, I have sought a second opinion on the matter,” Bais told a local TV channel in his hometown Raipur late on Wednesday.
“I don’t take any action on the basis of vindictiveness or to defame anyone. I hold a constitutional position and it’s my duty to uphold the Constitution,” he added.
Referring to criticism that attempts were being made to destabilise the JMM-led government in Jharkhand, the governor said: “If that was my intention, I could have taken a decision on the basis of the recommendation of the Election Commission.”
When asked if there could be “fireworks” in Jharkhand after getting the second opinion, the governor remarked: “You have referred to fireworks. There is a ban on crackers in Delhi, not in Jharkhand. Maybe, there could be an atom bomb blast.”
The governor's statement comes in the wake of a tussle between Bais and Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren over a sealed letter from the Election Commission of India. The contents have not been revealed but a political tug of war has dragged on over rumours that it recommends disqualification of Soren as an MLA over a stone-mining lease.
After the sealed letter arrived at Raj Bhawan in Ranchi on August 25, it triggered political uncertainty. Jharkhand legislators belonging to the ruling coalition were brought to the Chhattisgarh capital and put up at a luxury hotel for several days. Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren and other legislators alleged that the BJP was trying to topple the state government.
The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) sad it will challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court if it is not in their favour.
