NEW DELHI: In a freak accident, a 44-year-old man was killed after his building’s lift came crashing down from the third floor while he was in it with his seven-year-old child in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj on Wednesday. Police said though the kid miraculously survived, he was stated to be critical. No arrest was made till late evening.
The deceased was identified as Nawab Shah, who lived with his family and was a builder by profession. His son, Farhan, was still receiving treatment at a hospital.
Police said they received information about the incident around 12 pm from a hospital in Jasola Vihar. A team reached there and found that Shah was admitted and he had received injuries due to the breakage of the lift. “Shah had received serious injuries to both legs and feet,” an officer said.
Sources said that due to the fall, his legs were fractured.
The team later found the lift in an accidental condition. “At the time of the incident, Shah was going somewhere with his son. They had taken the lift from the third floor and within a few seconds, it came crashing down. It is suspected that wires of the lift broke, which resulted in the tragedy,” the officer said.
Hearing the loud noise, other residents rushed to the spot and both the victims were rushed to the hospital.
“The four-storey building was constructed about 2 years ago. Shah succumbed to injuries around 5 pm. He lived in the building for the past one year. The inquiry has revealed that the building was not fully constructed and lift not maintained properly,” the officer further said.
Cops initially registered a case under sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC. After the death, section 304 A (causing death by negligence) was also added. Police said the builder who constructed the building and installed the lift was yet to be traced.
“We are conducting raids to nab the accused. We will also check the documents of the building to know who its owner is,” the officer said.
Residents also alleged poor maintenance and negligence on the owner’s part.
