KANPUR: IIT-Kanpur was put on an alert on Wednesday after claims of leopard being sighted. Security guards of the institute claimed of spotting leopard. It was around 4 in the morning on Wednesday when guards spotted the leopard near institute’s airstrip. He apprised the institute administration of leopard’s presence on the campus.
Soon after, the institute residents were asked to remain vigilant. Search parties were alloted the task of capturing the leopard. The institute administration also informed Forest Department about this development and sought help.
However the leopard remained untraceable. Till the time of filing of this report, there was no information about its whereabouts. An email from the institute’s Deputy Director, Professor S. Ganesh was received by the members of the IIT community. The mail read that a leopard has been spotted on campus.
The animal is suspected to be hiding in the dense green cover in the area around IWD office, helicopter lab and the new type 3 area. The institute’s security force has been deployed to monitor leopard’s movement. Also the forest department has been requested to take appropriate action. Residents on the campus, particularly children are advised to remain vigilant and cautious untill further notice. As per information, IIT-Kanpur is using drones to monitor the movement of the leopard. Campus community has been asked to stay alert.
