SILCHAR: Assam minister for power, cooperation and mines Nandita Gorlosa has expressed concern over drug abuse among college students in Dima Hasao district.
Gorlosa, who is also a local MLA, held a meeting at the DCP’s office in Haflong on Tuesday to review the situation of drug trafficking and seizure in the hill district. She said the state government has zero-tolerance for drug abuse.
“Police are on their toes to prevent drug trafficking, and are regularly seizing consignments from different parts of the state. However, it is not possible to stop drug smuggling completely. It is shocking that college students are addicted to drugs in the hill district,” Gorlosa said on Tuesday.
The meeting was also attended by DC (Dima Hasao) Nazreen Ahmed, senior officials of the police department and security forces, including the commandant of the 5th Assam Police Battalion and an official of 11th Assam Rifles, DSP (Sadar) and an assistant commissioner of the district.
Gorlosa said the joint efforts of police and security forces will help prevent the drug menace. Otherwise, youths will be pushed to the brink of destruction. She also urged parents to be more vigilant. She instructed the administration to take stricter action against drug users as well as suppliers.
After the meeting, the minister, accompanied by DC Ahmed, visited Haflong sub-jail and interacted with prisoners who are below the age of 24 years.
