HYDERABAD: A sub-inspector (SI) of the Karimnagar police commissionerate was arrested for causing nuisance on the road along with his friends in an inebriated condition and assaulting police personnel of the Mancherial town police station, who reached the spot following a 'Dial 100' complaint by a woman doctor on Tuesday night. A video of the incident has gone viral.
The SI has been identified as A Tirupati of Bejjanki police station in Karimnagar commissionerate. Tirupathi was on leave for Diwali festival and went to his native place, Vempally village in Hajipur mandal near Mancherial. On Tuesday night, Tirupati along with seven others, including his brother, reached Mancherial town in a car and started consuming liquor.
The SI and his group had stopped their car in a lane near IB X roads in Mancherial town occupying a part of the carriageway. They consumed liquor in a nearby bar and started dancing on the road while playing loud music in the car.
Members of the group teased a woman doctor, who was returning home after work, and she called 'Dial 100'. A patrolling team of Mancherial town PS, comprising constable Osman and home guard Sampath, reached the spot and asked the members of the group, who were causing nuisance to leave the place. Introducing himself as an SI, Tirupathi picked up an argument with the patrolling team for asking them to leave the place, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), Mancherial, B Tirupathi Reddy said.
Soon, the SI and his friends began heckling. When the patrolling party started recording the video of the situation, the SI snatched the government-issued tab from the Mancherial police team and threw it on the road, the ACP said.
As the accused hurled stones at the patrolling team, home guard Sampath suffered a fractured toe during the assault and the constable suffered wrist fracture. Two other constables, who came there to help their colleagues, suffered bruises in the assault, Mancherial Town SI Anjaiah said.
Based on the complaint of the injured police personnel, a case was registered against the SI and his seven associates for assaulting a public servant and damaging public property under Sections 333, 324, 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the PDPP Act.
After the assault, the accused fled from the spot when additional forces were called for assistance. Police seized the car of Tirupati abandoned at the spot and arrested the SI along with three others on Wednesday. The accused would be produced before court for judicial remand.
