Vasai-Virar: The Virar police have registered a case of cheating and forgery against a man for allegedly duping at least six people on the pretext of providing them government jobs. The suspect had also provided a bogus joining letter of Urban Development Department (UDD) to one of the aggrieved, cops said.

The complainant in the case is a resident of Vikas Nagari in Virar. In July this year, he had received a phone call from a person informing that he had received the victim's number from a common friend. The caller further said that he had come to know that he wished to get a job at the BMC.

The victim confirmed to the caller that he was looking for a job in the municipal corporation, after which the latter said that eight vacancies are there in the BMC. The caller specified that the complainant would have to bear some expenses in order to get the job, the police said.

The fraudster induced the victim to pay money

Since then till date, the fraudster induced the victim to pay Rs 16,200 on various pretexts such as getting an NOC document prepared from a lawyer and medical certificate. The fraudster kept giving fake assurances in the meantime. He assured the victim that he would soon take him to Mantralaya where he will get his offer letter.

The fraudster even told the victim that he would have to undergo two months training, after which he would get a Rs28,000 salary. However, from last week onwards, the suspect began avoiding calls from the victim.

The man later learnt that like him, the fraudster had taken money from five others on the same pretext. One of the victims was also provided a bogus joining letter of the UDD. The fraudster had taken a total of Rs72,000 from the victims.

Based on the complaint lodged on Wednesday, a case was registered under the Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery) and 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating).
