PRAYAGRAJ: At least six people including four women and two minors were killed and four others sustained injuries when the SUV carrying them turned turtle after hitting an electric pole near Handia tax plaza road under the limits of Handia police station in trans Ganga pocket of Prayagraj district on Thursday morning.
Police here said five persons died on spot while another succumbed to her injuries during the treatment.
The incident took place at around 6.30am when the SUV was on its way to Vindhayanchal from Shivgarh (Soraon).
Upon being alerted, a team of Handia police rushed to the spot and brought injured persons to SRN hospital for treatment.
Senior police officials including IG Prayagraj Range, Rakesh Singh and SSP (Prayagraj) Shailesh Kumar Pandey too rushed to the spot to find out the reason behind the incident.
Initial police investigation revealed that the driver of the SUV was feeling sleepy and he lost control over the vehicle. The over-speeding vehicle first hit an electric pole and then turned turtle.
The deceased have been identified as Rekha Devi (40), Rekha (32), Krishna Devi (70), Kavita (36), Nayasa ( 14) and Shailesh (1), all residents of Shivgarh.
The injured persons including Umesh (33), his wife Priya (30), Rishabh (26) and driver Irshad were admitted to the SRN hospital for treatment.
District Magistrate (Prayagraj) Sanjay Khatri visited the SRN hospital and talked to injured persons. He also directed SRN hospital authorities to offer adequate treatment to injured persons.
