Lord Chitragupta is said to be a close associate of Lord Yama (the God of Death), and he keeps the details of birth, dates, and register of all the souls. Since he uses pens and paper, these items are offered to him on this day to seek his blessings.

According to mythology, Lord Chitragupta was created by blending the soul and mind of Lord Brahma. Lord Chitragupta is known to be an associate of Lord Yama, and he keeps a record of all humans and their karmas. Based on the karma of all humans at the time of death, Chitragupta decides where the souls will reside. Heaven and hell are assigned to souls based on their karma.Chitragupta was tasked with reading the Vedas like the Brahmins, and he also had to uphold the duties of a Kshatriya, or warrior.

The second day of Kartik month, which is a Shukla Paksha and is also known as Yama Dwitiya, is the day Chitragupta puja is held.

The Shukla Paksha Dwitiya will commence on October 26th at 2:42 PM. The tithi and mahurat are between 1:18 PM to 3:33 PM. The Dwitiya Tithi will end at 12:45 PM on October 27th.

According to mythology, Chitragupta was married to Yama’s daughter Iravati, through whom he had eight sons. He was also married to the daughter of Surya, Nandini, through whom he had four sons. These 12 sons were told to start a vansha (dynasty) called Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas: Saxena, Mathur, Gaur, Nigam, Asthana, Kulshrestha, Suryadwaja, Bhatnagar, Ambastha, Srivastava, Karna, and Valmiki.

There are two temples of Chitragupta in India, Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that the temple was built around 4,000 years ago, while another temple, Kanchipuram Tamil Nadu, was made by the Chola Kings - dating back to the 9th century.
