Uttar Pradesh: 'Poorly preserved' platelet caused dengue patient's death in Prayagraj

PRAYAGRAJ: It was poorly preserved platelet, and not 'mosambi juice' (sweet lime juice), that led to the death of a 36-year-old dengue patient at Prayagraj-based Global Hospital on October 17.
Meanwhile, the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) has served a notice on the owner of a building which houses this hospital in Dhoomanganj area of the city, asking the occupants to vacate the premises before October 28 as the building, constructed without proper approved plans, would be sealed.
Prayagraj DM Sanjay Khatri said on Wednesday that a probe had found that the patient had been given a packet of 'poorly preserved' platelets. "The report submitted by a three-member probe team found that the patient had been given poorly preserved platelets. The report also found laxity in treatment at Global Hospital. We are taking action based on this information," he said.
The hospital came under the scanner after the family of the patient claimed that he died after being administered ‘mosambi’ juice instead of platelets on October 17. The transfusion was done on October 14 and the patient died on October 17 in another hospital in the Georgetown area of the city.
His family had claimed that the platelets he was administered were very thin and made of fruit juice after which the district administration had ordered a high-level probe into the matter. Deputy CM and health minister Brajesh Pathak, too, had taken cognizance of the matter and directed the officials to take strict action against those found guilty.
Two days later, the Prayagraj police busted a gang involved in the sale of fake platelets and plasma and arrested its 10 members in the city. Altogether, 18 pouches of plasma, three pouches of alleged fake platelets, Rs 1.02 lakh, 13 mobiles and three two-wheelers were seized from them near SRN Hospital Road.
The PDA notice dated October 19, 20022 says: “The said building, including the hospital, has been constructed against rules of the UP Nagar Niyojan & Vikas Adhiniyam, 1973, at Khelgaon Road in Dhoomanganj area without a sanctioned map. The first notice in this regard was issued on September 3, 2021. The dates for hearing in the case were fixed on September 17 and October 5, 2021.”
“However, the owner of the building didn’t represent her position on these dates. She also did not submit the required documents, including the sanctioned map. Following which, a demolition order was issued on January 11, 2022. Now, in a notice issued on October 19, the building owner has been asked to vacate the building on or before October 28 so that it could be sealed by the PDA,” an official said.
