Diwali revelry: Nagpur Municipal Corporation lifted 1,235 MT garbage till 6pm on Tuesday

NAGPUR: A day after the Diwali revelry, roads of Nagpur city were strewn with remains of crackers. Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) sanitary workers toiled hard and not only cleaned internal and major roads, but also collected a huge amount of waste.
NMC’s solid waste management department said it had lifted 1,235.39 metric tonne garbage on Tuesday till 6pm. Generally, the solid waste management department, through two private firms AG Enviro and BVG India, continues work of lifting city’s garbage till 9pm, said deputy municipal commissioner Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
TOI had recently highlighted that due to pre-Diwali cleaning, the city’s garbage generation has increased by almost 200 MT. The average garbage collection of Nagpur city in the last six days (from October 20 to 25) was 1,331.27 MT per day.
In the last six days, NMC transported 7,987.64MT of garbage from the city to Bhandewadi dumping yard. On October 22, the city generated the highest quantum of garbage, 1,401.82 MT. SWM officials clarified that this was due to Dhanteras.
There was more than usual waste in Nagpur due to bursting of crackers on Monday. Sanitary workers started working earlier than their usual time and in some localities they worked till late afternoon.
The data shared by SWM also indicates that the highest quantum of garbage was generated by Lakadganj zone. Here, in the last six days, SWM through BVG Enviro collected 933.99 MT of garbage. The lowest quantity of garbage was collected from Nehru Nagar zone. Here, AG Enviro lifted 708.87 MT of garbage.
