Naxals kill man and burn road works machines in Kandhamal
Berhampur: Maoists allegedly killed a 30-year-old man and burnt down three vehicles and some machines engaged in road construction at separate places in Kandhamal district’s Baliguda police limits in the last two days.
The deceased was identified as Nilakanth Mallick of Ambabadi village and the Maoists had branded him as a police informer. Sources said some armed Maoists took Mallick with them and later his body was found near the forest. “We suspect they might have beaten the youth to death,” said a police officer. The body has been recovered and handed over to the family members after postmortem,” said SP (Kandhamal) Veenit Agrawal.
The rebels left behind some posters on the spot confessing to the act. “Mallick informed police about the Maoist activities for which the encounter took place at Kanasul forest area, where one of our comrade — Poyam Panda alias Sabitri of Chhattisgarh got martyred,” the Maoist said. “Others will also face similar consequences if they inform police about the Maoists,” said the posters of KKBN (Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh) committee of the CPI (Maoist).
A woman Maoist was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Kanasalu forest and huge quantities of the firearms and other items were recovered from the ultras from the spot on September 11. Two days later, police recovered several belongings of Maoists from the nearby area. Police did not identify the deceased Maoist.
Similarly on Monday night, around 20 armed Maoists set the vehicles on fire at the camp at Jagri. They warned the labourers present in the camp to stop the road works. The camp was set up at Jagri by the contractor, who is constructing the road from Pataribhata to Jagri under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
