MANGALURU: Senior professors of Mangalore University (MU) are unhappy, and expect a poor response to admissions to postgraduate (PG) programmes, as there is limited time to apply for the courses by candidates.
Four days ago, MU invited applications for admission to various postgraduate, diploma and certificate programmes for the academic year 2022-23. The last day to apply for the courses is November 3. From this year, the entire process of PG admissions will be online, and be done through the Unified University and College Management System (UUCMS).
“Even though this time it is an online process, the time is limited. Besides, the results of the exams for the sixth semester are yet to be declared. As per officials, they will be announced by the end of October. The candidates will have a tough time applying through UUCMS, which is known for snags,” said a senior professor, teaching at the Mangalagangothri campus in Konaje.
The professor added that even if MU announces results by the month’s end, as usual, many candidates will have issues with their results. Some of the issues are withholding of admissions, errors in marks awarded, and others. It will take MU some time to rectify them,” he said.
Last academic year, the deadline of PG admissions was postponed several times, owing to glitches in the exam software, and other technical reasons. The classes started only in mid-December. During the pre-pandemic days, the PG courses used to start in August.
Another senior professor from University College, Hampankatta, stressed that MU is likely to postpone PG admissions like the previous academic year. “It is not possible for candidates to apply on short notice. Most importantly, the majority of the PG aspirants under MU have not received their final semester results.”
Some of the PG aspirants requested MU to declare the sixth-semester results at the earliest, so that PG admissions and classes start on time. PS Yadapadithya, vice-chancellor, pointed out that the last date for applying for the PG courses will be extended.
“We are not sure whether the results of the sixth semester will be announced on October 30, as assured by the registrar (evaluation). Even if it is announced on the said date, MU has to give a gap of at least 15 days, after results are declared, for PG admissions. Therefore, MU will hold meetings with officials after Diwali holidays, and decide about extending the PG course admission dates, he said.
