Mumbai: Cops save man's life after he tries to hang himself over domestic dispute
Timely intervention by police saved the life of a 30-year-old man here after he allegedly tried to hang himself early Tuesday morning.
The incident took place in suburban Vikhroli.
Constable Deepak Lahane and his two colleagues visited the man's house around 2 in the morning after learning that a noisy quarrel was going on between husband and wife inside.
Farmers affected by excessive rains will be given compensation: Maha CM Shinde
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday said he has given directions to expedite the process of assessment of crop losses due to excessive rains in parts of the state and assured that the affected farmers will be provided compensation.
Speaking to reporters at the Nagpur airport ahead of his visit to Gadchiroli district in the Vidarbha region, Shinde said his government has taken "72 big decisions" in the interest of the people in last three months and he will respond to the opposition's criticism by showing the work done by his government.
He also said that the cabinet expansion will take place at an appropriate time.
Pune Bar Association denies receiving notice barring women from "arranging their hair in open court"
Pune Bar Association ruled out receiving notice from the registrar's office that allegedly barred women from "arranging their hair in open court" since it "disturbs the functioning of the court".
The notice which surfaced on the internet read, "It is repeatedly noticed that women advocated are arranging their hair in open court, which is disturbing functioning of the court. Hence women advocates are hereby notified to refrain from such acts." According to the President of PBA Pandurang Thorve if any notice gets issued from the registrar's office, "it has to come to PBA. As far as this notice which is vital on social media is concerned PBA has never received such notice".
Mumbai's air quality in poor category on day after Diwali
A day after Diwali, the air quality in Mumbai remained in the 'poor' category with the overall air quality index (AQI) at 290.
According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the AQI in the overall Mumbai region was in the 'very poor' category at. In Andheri, AQI was in 'very poor' category at 358. In BKC and Borivali, the AQI remained 'poor' at 293 and 232 respectively. In Chembur and Malad, AQI was 'very poor' at 319 and 375 respectively. However, in worli area, the air quality was in the 'satisfactory' category.
Central Rail up 'Restaurant on Wheels' at 4 more stations in Maharashtra
The Central Railway will soon set up 'Restaurant on Wheels' at four more stations in Maharashtra apart from two such existing facilities, to offer a unique experience to diners inside a modified coach mounted on rails, officials said on Tuesday.
The CR opened one such restaurant at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai last year and another one at Nagpur station earlier this year under the Non Fare Revenue Scheme.
Similar restaurants will soon come up at Akurdi, Chinchwad, Baramati (all in Pune district) and Miraj (Sangli) stations under the scheme, the Central Railway (CR) said in a release.

Thanekars want stray dog population under control
Citizens of Thane are alleging that the canine population in the city has increased over the last two years with the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMCs) veterinary department not sterilising dogs on a regular basis.
“We want the TMC to control their population in the city,” a Thane-based social activist said on Sunday.
A CCTV clip of an October 14 incident highlighted the issue, showing 7-8 dogs chasing kids in their posh Lodha Amara residential complex in the Kolshet area of Thane. Activists from the city say residents live in fear as dogs in their society have become very aggressive.
Sneha Singh, a social activist from Majiwada (Thane) said, “The society is not against dog and just want their population under control. These dogs have been charging and pouncing on women and children. Residents have complained to the TMC's veterinary department and local corporators several times but to no avail.” According to Singh, this issue is not just limited to Lodha Amara and is visible all over Thane.

Fire breaks out at godown in Sakinaka
A fire broke out in a godown in Mumbai's Sakinaka area on Tuesday. According to Mumbai Fire Brigade, a level-2 fire broke out at a godown on Mumbai's Sakinaka-Khairani road.
After getting the information, fire tenders rushed to the spot. Currently, eight fire tenders are on the spot to put the fire under control.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. So far no injury has been reported. Further details awaited.
Strike by wet-lease bus drivers causes inconvenience to commuters
Several wet-lease bus drivers of Marol and Dindoshi bus depot of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) went on strike on Monday. As a result, dozens of wet lease buses of Marol and Dindoshi depots were not available leading to inconvenience to the hundred of Mumbaikars.
"Some bus drivers of a contractor suddenly went on strike on Monday," said an official of BEST adding that extra buses from other depots were immediately diverted on the affected route for the convenience of Passengers.

70 percent of all fires reported in city in last four years caused by defective electric circuits
Recent fires in high-rise buildings have raised a concern of safety. The data received from Mumbai Fire brigade (MFB) reveals that 70% of the fires reported in the city in the last four years were caused by defective electric circuits.
A fire due to electric short circuits in Tardeo's Sachinam Heights took 9 lives in January 2022. Similarly, a massive fire injured six residents of Railview building in Kurla at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminal on October 8. The MFB's primary investigation found that the fire was caused by electric circuits.
According to the MFB data, 17,527 fires were reported from 2019 to 2022. Out of it 12,117 were of electric-origin.
35% of Airoli-Kalwa elevated corridor complete
The new suburban corridor link between Airoli-Kalwa (elevated) on the Central Railway (CR) network will not only decongest one of the biggest railway station of Thane but also directly connect Kalyan to Navi Mumbai. The sanctioned cost of this project is Rs 476.00 crore, with 35% of the work completed so far. The project is being executed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC).
Under the project, a new station at Digha is being constructed which will be completed by end of this year. The station will have two platforms, with each being 270m long and 12m wide. There will be two lifts and four escalators, along with four underpasses for passengers. That there will also be ground-plus-two-storey structures on both sides of the station that would house booking offices and four ticket windows each.
In the second phase, the Kalwa elevated railway station will be constructed.
