LUDHIANA: Nine months after his marriage, a man died by suicide on Diwali night at their house in Grewal Colony of Tibba area in Ludhiana.
The police on Tuesday lodged an FIR against his wife and in-laws for abetment to suicide. According to the family, the victim's wife had fought with him and had left the house in the evening following which he was upset as it was their first Diwali after marriage.
The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh (24), who got married to Harmandeep Kaur. Gurpreet's father Harminder Singh is a home guard sub-inspector.
On the statements of the family of Gurpreet, the Tibba police have lodged an FIR against Harmandeep Kaur, her mother Jasveer Kaur alias Haria Mittal and father Mohan Mittal.
Harminder Singh alleged that soon after the marriage, Harman started harassing Gurpreet. Earlier, Gurpreet was living in Cyprus and Harman also wanted to go abroad. The family had spent about Rs 25 Lakh in getting Harman’s visa however recently Gurpreet came to know that Harman has mentioned her marital status ‘single’. Gurpreet was upset over it and he also had a fight with Harman over the issue. Besides, Harman had also threatened to leave Gurpreet after going abroad.
Further Sukhdeep Kaur, Gurpreet’s mother stated that on Monday evening, Gurpreet and Harman fought over the issue of going abroad. Thereafter, Harman called her parents at home who thrashed Gurpreet. When she came for his rescue, the accused thrashed her too. Harman left the house with her parents. Gurpreet was disheartened and had pleaded before Harman to not leave him as it was their first Diwali celebration, however she did not listen to him.
On Monday night the family had gone to sleep and Gurpreet was in his bedroom. On Tuesday early morning when Gurpreet’s mother woke up she found him dead and raised an alarm.
