Hours after his appointment as Britain's Prime Minister by King Charles III, Rish Sunak, while delivering on his "work begins immediately" promise, asked many of Liz Truss loyalists to step down from the cabinet as he began to unveil his top team of ministers.

Sunak, Britain's third prime minister in 2 months, re-appointed Jeremy Hunt as the country's finance minister. Sunak's second cabinet appointment was his close ally Dominic Raab as deputy prime minister and justice secretary.

He also retained James Cleverly as foreign secretary, and Ben Wallace in the defence brief.

British lawmaker Simon Hart was appointed chief whip - the government role in charge of discipline within the Conservative Party.

Soon after the news of his reappointment as finance minister, Jeremy Hunt took to Twitter and vowed to work to restore stability, confidence and long-term growth, while acknowledging a tough time lay ahead.

"It is going to be tough. But protecting the vulnerable - and people's jobs, mortgages and bills - will be at the front of our minds as we work to restore stability, confidence and long-term growth," Hunt said on Twitter.

Sunak, a 42-year-old investment banker-turned politician, is the youngest British prime minister in 210 years. He is also Britain's first Hindu Prime Minister.

In his first address at the doorstep of 10 Downing Street in London after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, the new Prime Minister said that he takes over at a time when the UK is facing a "profound economic crisis" as it deals with the aftermath of COVID and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

As the former chancellor made his first prime ministerial address, he was not joined by his wife Akshata Murty and daughters Krishna and Anoushka as was expected. He then went in for meetings with officials at 10 Downing Street to start finalising his Cabinet, starting with the key roles of Chancellor, Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary.

Sunak faces the enormous challenge of steering the UK economy through massive inflationary turbulence and also uniting the different wings of a divided Conservative Party.
