A case has been filed against a woman doctor for allegedly destroying a roadside stall that sold earthen lamps (diyas) and decorative items in Lucknow’s Gomti Nagar area Monday, the police said. The matter came to light when a video of the incident went viral.
Dr Anju Maurya, the accused, was allegedly upset with shopkeepers for putting up the stalls in front of her residence, officers said. In the video, the doctor can be seen destroying items at the stall using a mop. Station house officer (Gomti Nagar) Dinesh Chandra Mishra said the woman was upset because she was facing problems due to the stalls.

According to the police, the woman, who is the daughter of a retired IAS officer, had on Monday morning asked the complainant to remove the stall erected outside her house in Patrakarpuram. When he did not budge, she poured water on some of the items in the stall. Later, she damaged earthen lamps and other decorative items.
In a video, the complainant is purportedly heard saying, “Madam (the doctor) came out of her house in the morning with a water pipe in her hand and asked to remove the stall. She poured water on me and in the shop, and kicked the decorative items, breaking it. I asked her to give us some time to shift the items to another place in a vehicle, but she did not listen. She then came with a stick and a mop.”
A senior police officer said stalls selling earthen lamps and other festival items were set up in a space opposite the doctor’s house, but not at her residence. Officers added that over the last few years, some local residents have been putting up such roadside stalls during Diwali.
The police said the doctor’s statement has been recorded and a probe is underway. She has been booked under IPC sections 427 (mischief causing damage) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).
