COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police arrested five men on Monday night in connection with a car blast in front of the Sangameswarar Temple at Kottaimedu in the early hours of Sunday.
Police said the arrested people were suspected to be the close associates of Jameesha Mubin, 29, of Kottaimedu who died in the car explosion. They have been identified as Mohammed Azarudheen, 27, and Mohammed Thalka, 25, of Ukkadam, Mohammad Riyas, 27, Firoz Ismail, 27 and Muhammad Nawaz Ismail, 27,of GM Nagar.
The police collected CCTV footage which showed Mubin and a few others taking out an object wrapped in a white sack from the Mubin’s residence in HMPR Street at Kottaimedu around 11.30 pm. During the interrogation, the arrested men told the police that Mubin was shifting to another house nearby and they helped him move household articles.
The police searched the houses of the arrested men.
Earlier, the police conducted a search at Mubin’s residence and seized potassium nitrate, aluminium powder, sulphur, charcoal and some incriminating documents. The police checked his mobile phones and found that Mubin had searched on YouTube how to make bombs.
The Maruti 800 car caught fire due to the explosion of gas cylinders in the early hours of Sunday. Mubin was charred to death.
