Mysuru: A few days after India freed itself from the colonial yoke on August 15, 1947, freedom fighters in the erstwhile Mysore state launched the ‘Mysore Chalo’ movement demanding the installation of a government in the then princely state. To mark the anniversary of the conclusion of the ‘Mysore Chalo’ movement, the Mysuru City and District Freedom Fighters’ Association assembled at the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial at Subbarayanakere in Mysuru on Monday.
President of the association, YC Revanna said that the then administrators of the Mysore State were resisting the idea of allowing a government to assume power despite India having attained Independence. Members of the then executive committee in Karnataka decided to launch a movement on August 20, 1947. KC Reddy, who was at the forefront of the movement, later went on to serve as the first chief minister of the state. The movement culminated with Reddy assuming office as the head of a government on October 24, 1947.
Banaraya Ramaswamy, who was among the activists who participated in the movement, was martyred during an agitation at a circle, which now bears his name, said Revanna. On Monday, freedom fighters, along with students, who arrived at the memorial in a procession, paid tribute to the Ramaswamy Memorial.
