NASHIK: The Nashik police have begun special patrolling on the Nashik-Pune highway from Saturday to appeal to truckers and other heavy vehicle drivers to keep to the left lane.
The aim is to bring lane discipline among the heavy vehicle drivers and also to ensure police presence during the night hours.
"We have already started patrolling on the Mumbai-Agra highway from Adgaon to Gaulane Phata from July this year. The results are on the expected lines. Therefore, it was decided to start night patrolling on the Pune highway stretch under the police commisisonerate as well from Saturday," said a senior police officer.
A team of 10 personnel patrol the highway from either side at the same time and appeal to the truckers to keep left. Officials said that the patrolling is done from Fame Theatre junction till Chincholi Phata. The patrolling begins at 12 midnight and continues till 4 am.
Many times, a large number of accidents occur when trucks and other heavy vehicles are parked along the road-side due to some mechanical problem or some other reason without keeping the parking light lit.
The police would spot some motorists as well on the highway and ask them to take necessary preventive measures. This will also help in maintaining police presence on the highway during the night hours, which would possibly prevent other crimes like highway robbery, etc.
The traffic police said that the number of accidents taking place during the day time as almost equal to those taking place in the night hours. This is because motorists tend to overspeed their vehicles during the night hours when the roads are empty. The night patrolling would take care of all such issues.
