MNM slams corpn for paying civic workers low wages
Coimbatore: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Sunday condemned the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) for reportedly exploiting the contract sanitary workers by paying minimum wages.
Extending solidarity to the indefinite strike called by the workers from October 25, MNM vice-president R Thangavelu said the civic body is failing to provide certain privileges like stipulated working hours, festival bonus, and job regularisation. “The contractors are paying the workers a meagre 333, instead of the government-fixed wage of 721. How can the workers run their families with this low wage? Workers in village panchayats are being paid just 100 per day,” he said.
The workers are allotted houses on the outskirts of the city, which makes them face difficulty while commuting to the city early in the morning for work. “They are being exploited with minimum pay, only in Coimbatore corporation, not in places like Erode or Tirupur,” the MNM leader added. TNN
