Berhampur: A monkey had been terrorising villagers in Jammuni and Belagaon areas of Ganjam district for the past few days before it was captured by forest personnel on Sunday. “The rogue monkey was captured after it was tranquilized in the presence of wildlife and veterinary personnel,” said Amlan Nayak, divisional forest officer, Berhampur. The monkey was then released in the jungle, located about 20-km from the village after its health check up.
Villagers alleged that the money had life difficult in the last few days as it had been attacking people. Some of the villagers complained of sustaining injuries. Worried over the monkey menace, parents were scared to allow their children venture outside. The simian had apparently destroyed guava plantation, entered houses and stole food, they alleged.
“We went to the village after receiving complaints. We took two days to identify the rouge money that had been terrorising the villagers,” said Rajat Kumar Mishra, forest ranger, Berhampur.
“After identifying it, we chalked out a plan in consultation with the wildlife and veterinary personnel. Around 15 people were involved in capturing the rogue monkey,” he added.
