IMD predicts heavy rain in parts of coastal Odisha for two days
The state capital may witness one or two spells of moderate rain
BHUBANESWAR: The depression over west-central Bay of Bengal has intensified on Sunday and is likely to take the shape of a cyclonic storm by midnight, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated as it issued yellow warning of heavy rain for coastal districts on Monday and Tuesday.
After forming a cyclonic storm, it is likely to recurve and move north-westward and cross Bangladesh coast between Tinkona Island and Sandwip, close to Barisal, early of Tuesday.
The system will have maximum sustained surface wind speed of 90 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, while making landfall as a severe cyclonic storm, the Met department said.
The weather department has issued yellow warning of heavy rainfall at one or two places in Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri from Sunday while moderate to heavy rain is likely to continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack on Monday.
The state capital, which witnessed pleasant weather with an overcast sky, is likely to witness one or two spells of moderate rain on Monday, said sources at the meteorological centre, Bhubaneswar.
Though preparations for a grand Diwali celebration is in full swing in Odisha after people came to know that the cyclone will have little impact on Odisha coast, many are keeping their fingers crossed about cyclone-triggered rainfall activities. Meanwhile, the IMD informed about the complete withdrawal of southwest monsoon from the state.
